Why Metal Roofs Are Great for the Winter

Why-Metal-Roofs-Are-Great-for-the-Winter

Winter weather and its effects on your home can be concerning, but metal roofs can literally help the stress (and the snow) melt away. While roofs are built to withstand harsh conditions, snow and ice are far from being a welcome addition to any rooftop. Metal roofing handles the elements much better than other roofing materials, though, and here’s why.

Snow and Ice Slide off of Metal Roofs

When a winter storm hits, snow and ice pile up on your roof. Temperatures fluctuate throughout the storm and the days after, causing melting and refreezing. This allows water to seep slowly into small cracks and holes in your roof, and then the water expands as it refreezes. Serious damages like cracks and holes in your roof are often the results.

Metal roofing virtually eliminates this possibility because the ice and snow literally slide right off the roof. Ice dams are unable to form because there’s nothing for the ice to adhere to. Since there’s no heavy snow or ice thawing and refreezing on your roof, the chances of damage during winter storms are significantly less with a metal roof than it is with asphalt shingles.

Metal Roofs Can Be Installed in Winter

What happens if you need a new roof in the winter? Asphalt shingles are difficult to install when it’s cold outside and they require added precautions. Metal roofing, on the other hand, can be installed any time of the year with no problems.

They Are Energy Efficient

Metal is a reflective surface, so roofs made of metal reflect the sun keeping your house nice and cool in the summer. They also do a good job of holding in heat during the winter months. One study found that many roof types allow temperatures in the attic to drop significantly in cold weather, while metal roofs routinely outperformed them by at least 20 degrees.
